Atelier combines the functionality of a desk lamp with a convenient space for books and a welcome splash of colour, making it a great addition to a study, studio or work space. Breaking away from convention, I used a cheerful yellow planter for a lamp shade and incorporated a small brass pivot that offers a comfortable degree of adjustment. Instead of squaring the base, I retained the asymmetry of that piece of wood in order to highlight its natural beauty.
In making Atelier I experimented with some new joinery. Apart from mortise-and-tenon joints, it features an angular joint that is neither a typical dado nor a tongue-and-groove, but has characteristics of both. The lamp is made of solid teak wood and all the joints are hand cut. The wood is hand sanded and finished with an eco-friendly, water-based wood finish.
